Dogs will have their day at Bow Wow Pow Wow show in Ramona

Dogs and their owners will take center stage when the gates to Ramona’s Bow Wow Pow Wow Dog Show open on Saturday, Sept. 16.

Presented by the Kiwanis Club of Ramona, the family event will be at the Ramona Fair Grounds off Fifth Street and Aqua Lane from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration starts at 10 a.m. and is also available online at ramonakiwanis.org.

Frosted Faces Foundation is partnering with Kiwanis on the popular fundraiser. A portion of the day’s proceeds will go to Frosted Faces’ Senior to Seniors program.

It doesn’t matter if your dog is a purebred or a mutt, tiny or stocky, all are welcome. This is an opportunity to showcase your pets and enter them in one or more contests. Categories are: Best Costume (adult’s dog), Best Costume (child’s dog), Most Beautiful (Female), Most Handsome (Male), Dog and Owner Look Alike, Most Talented, Best Tail Wagger, Best Kisser, Most Unusual Markings, Cutest Little Dog, Senior Dog, Best in Show, and People’s Choice.

Entry fees for one to four categories is $5 each, with entry fee for five categories $20. Ribbons will go to first, second and third place in each category. A special ribbon will go to the Best in Show.

In addition to the variety of contests featuring pups and their owners, attendees will enjoy food, opportunity drawings and baskets, and the time to network with other dog lovers.

Frosted Faces will have a booth, and the Ramona Sheriff’s Substation will have an information booth featuring its Project Lifesaver, crime prevention, and other free programs. A Sheriff’s search and rescue dog is expected to make an appearance.

The Kiwanis food booth will include hamburgers, hot dogs, soda, and water.

Also featured are the dog treats Kiwanian Jeanne Bell has made. They come three sizes — small, medium and large — and she says humans can also enjoy them, since they’re made with chicken and rice.

Bell, known for the gift baskets she puts together for all Kiwanis fundraisers, has packaged two large dog-related baskets — one geared toward girls and one to boys.

This is the 15th year Ramona Kiwanis is presenting Bow Wow Pow Wow. Admission is $5 for adults, with children age 12 and younger admitted free. Dogs and handlers also are admitted free.

Dedicated to community service, Ramona Kiwanis fundraisers benefit areas such as student scholarships, school supply drives, the back-to-school Shoes, Socks and Underwear Program, the Guy B. Woodward Museum, Ramona Skatepark Champions, Project Lifesaver, Ramona Veterans of Foreign Wars and military family holiday gifts, Ramona Senior Center, Boys Scouts, Girls Scouts, Montecito High School’s construction program, and Ramona High School’s football program and Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps.
